Abstract

Purpose: This phenomenological study aims to understand and describe the sleep experience of elderly in the long-term care facilities in Korea.

Methods: The participants of this study were 10 elders who stayed at the long-term care facilities for several years. They were asked to record and describe diverse aspects of their sleep experience in the facilities. Collected data included the participants¡¯ feelings and thoughts about their sleep. Data were collected from September, 2012 to February, 2013. A phenomenological analytic method suggested by Colaizzi was used to analyze the data.

Results: In this study, twenty two themes, eight theme clusters, and four categories were extracted: ¡®altered sleep pattern due to changes in the environment,¡¯ ¡®repeating the effort and failure to fall asleep in the changed surroundings,¡¯ ¡®facilities¡¯ routine disrupts good sleep,¡¯ and ¡®deciding the mind and body state by good sleep.¡¯

Conclusion: The quality of sleep is critical to health. With aging, elders in the facilities had unique sleep experiences and problems which they could not cope with. On the basis of this findings, health professionals could develop a tailored systematic and emotional support for the elderly in the facilities.
